[Rhodes22-list] Nuclear Waste Disposal (Was The HydrogenEconomyII)

They have been storing toxic waste in near by Oak Ridge since WWII. There is
a huge wooded buffer area around the plants. They have lottery style managed
hunts every year to thin out tukeys and deer. They put special weigh
stations around the lab grounds so people came bring in their prize and they
do the normal recording. They also conduct some type of test for
radioactivity. The game sometimes come up "hot".

I admit most of the problems were created years ago but there are still
issues even with modern techniques of storage and shipping. One of my wife's
friends works at ORN involved with the day to day operations of moving waste
in and out. Transportation of waste is a real area of concern and they have
accidents on occasion.

Most of our local problems were created long ago and the waters around ORNL
are much cleaner now than they were in the 70s. We have learned much from
our mistakes but it only take one big screw up.
