[Rhodes22-list] More newbie mast raising follies/transponderquestion

Alex et al,

Is there any reason why the mast needs to be up on the support while
trailering other than to put it at the optimum angle for raising once you
get to the ramp?

I have the aft mast support tower and mast raising system, but store the
mast resting horizontally on the bow pulpit and stern rail over the winter.
It's a long story but the boat is still in winter storage and I will have to
move her about 5 miles at the end of this month, and was wondering if I
needed to put the mast up at the normal trailering position, or if it was ok
to pull her around as-is.

For David Huckabee

David, the (current) mast raising system requires a high-density plastic
mounting block on your cabin roof forward of the mast step. If you don't
have this, you won't be able to borrow a mast raising system and use it.
You may not. My boat is an '85 recycled in '03, and it needed to be added.

The other secret of the mast raising system is using the lower shrouds to
keep the mast more or less centered as it is raised (less in the beginning,
more as you near full up. The forward lower shrouds take care of this at
the start, then the uppers take over as you near the top. Stan provides
extenders for the forward lowers that facilitate this. There have been
various types over the years, mine are galvanized chain. It is easy, even
with IMF, for one person to raise or lower the mast using Stan's mast
raising system. It is a worthwhile investment. I know this doesn't help
for this weekend, but good luck.

Rummy,

Do you know if the mast raising system has changed for the better since we
bought ours? I really find the boom support on the stern to be a bit of an
eyesore while trailering down the highway with the mast stuck up 6 feet
above the boat. I suggested telescoping support legs awhile back that would
allow the thing to drop down to the level of the stern rail while
trailering. It seemed like a reasonable idea to me.
