[Rhodes22-list] bad water in the laz?

Phyllis,

Rummy said," The only way water can get into the laz is over the rim of
the cover." Mr. Rummy forgot what he recently helped me fix. On my boat,
the cockpit drain had developed leaks that randomly let small amounts of
water seep into the lazerette. This past spring, with Mr. Rummy's
assistance and technical advice, I replaced the cockpit drain and put a new
more flexible hose to the thru hull. Walaa! The seepage leak has stopped.

It is my opinion that the leaks developed and occurred due to flexing of
the hull and cockpit. The cockpit drain fitting was original and used an
inflexible adhesive. The drain tube was probably replaced when the boat was
recycled. It was a very heavy-duty plastic tube; however, it was also not
very flexible. Since the fittings do not line up in my boat that results in
uneven pressure being applied to the thru hull and the cockpit drain
fitting. That pressure when added to flexing of the cockpit and hull
probably over time resulted in tiny cracks around the drain that allowed for
random seepage.

It is a known on this list that Sir Stanley likes 5200 sealant as do most
boat builders, however there has developed an opinion on this forum that
4200 or one of the sulfide sealants (i.e. Boatlife) are better because they
do flex.

P.S. See your brush dealer and get a brush that is about half an inch in
diameter with about a two or more foot wire handle to periodically clean
your cockpit drains.
