James,

You are quite right about your observations, and I have saved some 
information about this as it has appeared from time to time.  Stan has 
weighed in to report that moving the bulkhead that supports the mast has 
not weakened the boat.  It has, however, slightly changed the balance of 
the boat, and I believe the location of the mast was slightly changed.

Roger knew a lot about this, and frequently contributed to this topic.

Downloading the archives and indexing them using Google Desktop is 
probably a good idea for this project.

Thanks for the input--keep it coming.  I'll start seriously tracking 
this stuff down after the sailing season is over.
