a) No, but I might as well have been.  My non-sailing wife (I'm working on her) was along for the ride so I was pretty much sailing by myself.

b). Yes the boom was in the lower position.

I was really reefed way back to minimize heeling because my wife doesn't like heeling too much.  Consequently, my boat speed during lulls was not what it could have been.  However, I do not think I could have put up much more sail anyway because the gusts were so intense.    I don't know if it would have helped, but I also had not moved my jib sheets inside my shrouds.

Now, if my son had been out with me it might have been a different story.
