Peter,
Thanks for the kind words.  When I have a particularly eventful trip I have
started writing them down.  When I get too old to remember what I've done,
I pick it up and read it again.

Regarding the rudder.  Your configuration sounds different from mine.  My
configuration is completely made up of the black plastic material that the
rudder housing "cheeks" are made of.  My gudgeons are two pairs of the
plastic material bolted onto the stern.  The pintles, or rather the pintle
assemblies, are made up of plastic pieces about +/-5 inches long that, on
one end, fit between the two gudgeon pieces, and on the other end fit
between the rudderhead cheeks.  The top pintle fits between the two top
gudgeons and is fastened with a vertical bolt with a locking nut that
allows for pivoting.  The other end of the 5 inch piece is mounted to the
rudder head assembly with a throughbolt that passes horizontally through
the rudder assembly cheeks and the 5 inch piece of plastic (the 5 inch
piece is fitted between the cheeks).  The bottom pintle fits between the
bottom gudgeons just like the top one, but the connection to the rudder
head assembly was made with two screws fastened vertically through the
bottom of the 5 inch piece and into a spacer piece of plastic that holds
the rudder head cheeks apart along the forward edge of the rudder head
assembly.  It was these two screws that sheared and failed.  I don't know
why the lower piece wasn't through bolted like the upper piece.

True to General Boat form, all of the components were very sturdy and none
of the pieces showed any signs of fatigue or failure.  The plastic material
is extremely tough.  The gudgeons held well, and all of the through bolted
pieces held well.  In fact, I put quite a strain on the upper gudgeon and
pintle assembly after the lower unit failed and saw no signs of impending
failure even after all that strain.    I would not be concerned about any
of the bolts.  They are very strong.  The screws on the bottom were the
only weak link in the whole rudder assembly.  You probably want to inspect
your machine screws to make sure they are not loose, but if both your top
and bottom pintle pieces are throughbolted to the rudderhead in addition to
the screws, then you are in good shape.  I wouldn't worry about it.

I talked with Stan after getting home and actually sent him the whole
rudder head (minus the rudder blade) as he was understandably interested in
examining the parts.  Apparently, the Rhodes being a product of evolution,
there are a number of rudder configurations out there.  Stan told me was
that there were very few rudders built the way mine was, and that my
failure was the first that he had heard about.  So, bottom line, yours is
probably OK because it was not built like mine.  My advice to all Rhodes
owners, however, is to give your rudder a quick inspection before embarking
on any trip that will take you far from port.

I am a member of BoatUS and did consider calling TowBoatUS a couple of
times, but did not because I felt like doing so would be admitting defeat.
It is so much better for one's sense of accomplishment and cofidence
building to be self reliant.  I only wanted to use them as a last resort.
I saw a number of them out there and you could hear them on the radio
frequently.  I have a feeling that they do a very good business in the
Outer Banks area.  It is nice to know they are out there.

Bill,

No true adventure is complete without meeting adversity's challenge.  So
now, I guess your's is truly a great adventure.  Congratulations on
surviving your de-steering mishap and overcoming the grounding with your
perseverance and wits!  Thank you also for taking the time and effort to
chronicle this for us.  It is a great storey.

I am wondering about a few things:  Where exactly did the rudder fail?
After reading about day 4, I  inspected Raven's ('88) rudder.  The pintles
on the rudder head have a single through bolt (forward) and, on each side
(aft), machine screws into the plastic cheeks.  The latter does not
encroach
into the gap between the plastic cheeks.  Is this the same setup on your
boat and, in your now seasoned opinion, is there a "beefing up"
preventative
maintenance issue that perhaps others should address on their boats?  Did
the through bolt snap?  Was that the cause of the problem?  I presume the
gudgeons (the parts on the transom) did not fail.  Does anyone know - how
can you determine if a bolt if about to fail?

Do you know about the BoatUS Trailering Club and do you carry their
insurance?  If so, did you consider calling BoatUS on VHF 16 when your
grounding happened?   In our limited two years of cruising experience, that
insurance has paid for itself each year with highway flat tires and  "stuck
over ramp edge" towing services.  So far I haven't needed help on the water
(knock on wood).  However, I understand they are quite good.  Not exactly
sure what a service call costs - I think they pay the first $150.
