There is a great deal of information regarding internet connection (or at
least e-mail connection) via single side band which is a form of HAM radio.
The licensing requirements for marine SSB are simplified over the
traditional HAM and the real time communication ship to shore or ship to
ship would offer several advantages.  Information on SSB can be found at
