[Rhodes22-list] New sailor

Kathy,
Your sailing experience is very similar to mine (and your falling in love
with sailing) when we bought our Rhodes. Our friends (Mark and Julie, who
are still on the list, even though they sold their Rhodes) took us for a
sail a couple of years ago and we loved it. So I told them we wanted a boat
like theirs. They suggested we should start with something else and work
our way up to a Rhodes after trying this boat and that boat. I said I
appreciated all the research that they had done, but if this is what they
came up with, that was good enough for me. So I bought one. Now, my wife,
who had never sailed before, can at least sail out on the open water,
although she let's me take over when we are pulling into or leaving the
slip. As Rummy has suggested, this is a very good family boat, very stable,
won't sink (not that you want to try that feature), and easy to handle. Are
you planning to get a slip? Our biggest hardship is stepping the mast each
year, but the mast raising system seems to be the answer there. - rob

Rummy,

I guess my hesitation here is the fact that I have 3 days of
sailing experience on a 14' Hunter and am afraid a boat that size may be
too much for me.

Kathy,
The R22 is a ideal family boat. The large cockpit is ideal for
socializing and the cabin can provide an out of the way area when
desired. Don't forget to teach the kids how to sail once you have
regained your skills.
You will also find that this is a very forgiving boat. We all have done
a number of stupid things and lived to tell the tail. My stupid thing
was something you aren't supposed to be able to do with a Rhodes, but I
won't go into it again because it involved a large quantity of rum and
much wind and this is a family site.

Rummy
