[Rhodes22-list] Brad - Air Conditioning

Brad,
What about those streamlined AC units you see atop RVs? Are they also
120V? I guess power is always an issue.

Philip,

It is a standard 120v AC. Even the boat specific A/C
reverse cycle systems are 120v and thus can only be
used dockside. The problem with them is that while
quite small, they still take up room. More
importantly, the installation requires another
thru-hull. Holes in boats are not good things! You
can buy portable A/C units that fit in the hatch but
they are about $800. The unit shown in the photo is
about $80. If you have to leave your unit dockside
while sailing I'd rather leave the unit that costs
1/10 as much. We had a major windstorm here two years
ago, "Hurricane Elvis" and lost power for several
days. I was able to power the window AC using my 26
pound Honda 1000 watt generator. That was a good
proof of concept for the boat. The remaining issue is
"how safe is it with the exhaust fumes?" I've been
researching 12V A/C systems for a good while and
haven't come up with a viable alternative. You need a
lot of batteries or run your engine. Let's face it,
if you are sailing, you don't need A/C. The way I use
the boat right now, I only need A/C at night and
usually sleep at the dock. It would be nice to have
A/C in anchorage but short of the portable
genset/window unit combo, I don't know how to pull it
off. Which leaves us with the exhaust fumes issue.
