Rick,
        Regarding the riding sail, it is indeed a useful item to have on the
Rhodes (see the "Baja intro" section for some more details in the archives).
Briefly, it is a heavy duty sunbrella material that has 3 SS grommets, one
at each corner.  The "head" is attached via a salvaged brass jib hank to a
loop in the topping lift. The "foot" is similarly attached via a short line
to one of the boom cleats and the "outhaul" is attached to, the outhaul.  As
I recall it is an equilateral triangle 57" on a side.  The leading edge, or
luff I guess, is cut on a slight concave so it won't quiver.  The sail was a
gift from a friend.  He had it made up in Seattle I think.

I don't think that using the sail alone in a storm would be a good idea
unless you had a sea anchor deployed.  But I found it was great in
stabelizing the boat at anchor so it wouldn't "hunt" the wind like Rhodes so
often do.
