Rory,
when I get into 3.5ish feet of water, my unit starts to flash and go
blank - I think I am at the limit of
what the sensor can read. Also, if the keel is scrapping bottom. it
may be stirring up the bottom and causing
false readings and my unit to go blank.. Eventually something hits
bottom, either the keel or the rudder.
In any case, when depth gets less than 4 feet, the depth gauge has done
its job and now I am looking over
the side and "listening" to the keel and the rudder. I have never
tried to see if the gauge can read anything less.
Hope that helps.

-Bud
