Slim,
The SS I use is either 7/8 or 1" tubing @ $45/6' and is super-rigid in this application. I store the 3 lengths on the vberth with the sunbrella attached, and snap on the center pole (length #3), with sunbrella over the mast/sail and pole under the boom, when I want to use it. I can keep it in place long-term or remove it if I want, without concern that a storm or high winds will affect it's integrity. I wouldn't have the same confidence in a PVC structure if I wanted to keep the top up unattended for a long time. That would require glueing, hence a stowing problem. The pole assembly storage is a little bigger than 3" in diameter and 6 1/2' long. I like your boom room, just making it stiffer and simpler. This dialogue on the net has given me ideas for refining if further.
Cheers...
Art
