Arthur, et al.:
While I agree that SS is stronger, etc.,
I should report that I have used the hollow
pins with a ball detent on the far end and 
a push button on the flared "handle" end
quite successfully in joining PVC to 90 bend
corners, etc.  Drill the right size hole thru 
both the pipe and the fitting, and the pin is
a quick and easy way to join them.  I use this
option in my quick and dirty bimini for a 
small day sailer.  

The flare on the pin can be drilled so a piece
of small stuff can be used as a lanyard to keep
it handy where it is needed.
