In addition to Will's suggestions, I would get the biggest compass they
make. At his age size of display is not a factor, however as you get older,
the bigger the numbers the better.
The Red back light is a great idea, even for early evening sailing.
An alternative location for the depth finder instrumentation location
is the inside gunnell wall in back of the famous Rhodes line pockets about
the location of the forward backrail base. No one would be sitting on the
gunnell at that place and it is also forward of your exquisite captains
repose. At the same location, consider a 12 DC output jack for other
accessories such as a drink mixer, or gps.
Have you considered going down and putting them in your self? From
Stan's last comments, any help might be important if you expect to sail this
year. Remember, he does not have a line of job applicants that speak
English. At least in Spanish the numbers are the same, so they should be
right side up, but who knows. Of course that is assuming they know numbers.
