[Rhodes22-list] A story of a boat

Ed,

I've applied for entry into the witness protection program. I suggest
that Stan and Michael do the same.

I spoke with Elton just before he left, and suggested that he take along
3 bottle jacks. He rejected my suggestion. I have removed 2 of 3
bottle jacks from my truck that I was going to take with me "just in case."

Safely moving an R-22 from jack stands to a trailer takes around 20
minutes and not a whole lot of effort if you have 3 bottle jacks.

Here is the outline of the procedure:

1. Put a bottle jack on a piece of wood under the keel with another
piece of wood between the piston of the jack and the keel itself.

2. Jack up the boat (the boat weighs less than 2 tons--the bottle jacks
can handle 5-10 tons--the entire weight of the boat is never on a single
jack).

3. Using cinder blocks and wood, build a support under the keel.

4. Lower the boat onto the keel support.

5. The boat will lean either port or starboard.

6. Raise the jack stand on the side that is no longer fully supported
until it again supports its side of the boat.

7. Repeat this process, except while the boat is still being held up by
the jack under the keel, raise the height of the lowest jackstand to
keep them all roughly even.

8. Once there is enough clearance for the bunks under the boat, slide
in the trailer from the bow. It is easiest to do this by hand, as you
maintain more control.

9. With the boat held up by 3 jackstands and the jack, add a fourth
jackstand in front of the axle, or wherever it is needed. Remove the
jackstand behind the axle. Lower the boat onto the jackstands, and
repeat, moving one jackstand at a time into a position that allows the
trailer to continue sliding back under the boat. (This is easier to see
than to say.)

10. 2 jackstands under the flat aft section and one V shaped jackstand
under the bow make a very stable platform when the greatest part of the
weight is resting on the platform under the keel.

11. Why 3 bottle jacks? -- If you have jackstands that are open on the
bottom you can put hydraulic jacks under each open jackstand tube. Jack
up the jackstand, turn the rotating collar to lock it in position, do
the same on the next one. Build up the platform under the keel as you
go. It is fast and effortless.
