You have not thrown me for a loop.  We don't agree on many things, but 
you are consistent in your point of view, and you do think about what 
you write.

I agree with you on this one.

Schools shouldn't have to deal with the unintended consequences of 
trying to waive their traditions in one case but not another.  The idea 
behind the cap and gown is that everyone graduating is the same, and 
everyone has achieved the same milestone.  Inevitably some will go on to 
better lives than others, but at this time they should all symbolically 
commence entry to the next phase of their lives equally.
