John,
There are fore sails, main sails, and books describing many other sails for
boats. There stayed masts and unstayed masts. There are various numbers of
stays on boats with stays. Typically small sail boats the size of the
Rhodes if they have stays either have four or six stays. The Rhodes 22 has
nine stays to handle your question of weight aloft. The answer to your
question is the redundant rigging.
The Rhodes 22 comes in both the standard main version and the IMF version.
The costs of the IMF is more than the costs of the standard main. When
evaluating answers to boat performance on this list, ask which version the
respondent has real experience with. I have the IMF. Captain Rummy,
Captain Wally and Captain Bill Effros all sail the IMF. Others can offer
better advice than us on the standard main. Furthermore, there are Rhodes
22’s while having standard main sails, the mast they use are not standard
mast for the Rhodes 22.
In the last few months I have referred others to the way to research the
archives on subjects of interest. There is the document library on this
site. There is a related web site that has many historical FAQ’s. There
are many good books on sails and the web sites by manufactures of sails,
masts and sail accessories that provide more knowledge.
No sail boat will meet all your wishes. The Rhodes 22 with the IMF is
unique and a great learning sailboat. It is made strong and is very safe.
It is not going to sink. Many former members of this list have moved on to
bigger boats. If you want to learn to sail there is a point when reading
needs to supported by actual experience. If you are serious you need to
pick up the phone and make an appointment with Captain Rummy or Commodore
Spitzer.
