Julie,

The "Train to the Plane" is now politically correct and finished:

http://www.panynj.gov/airtrain/pdf/JFK_airtrain_map.pdf

Service from JFK to Jamaica (NY) is very fast and relatively low cost. The
problem is that the Port Washington branch of the LIRR connects with the
LIRR line closer to NYC, in either Woodside or Penn Station
(http://mta.info/lirr/).

The best bet, if you want to travel by train, is to catch the train from JFK
to Jamaica ($5), transfer to a train to Penn Station ($5/$7) and then
transfer to the Port Washington branch ($6/$8.25). The prices are for
tickets purchased in the automated vending machines ($5 additional on the
train) at off-peak/peak travel times.

It might be take a while (~2 hrs) - a car service such as Classic Transport
(http://www.classictrans.com) right out of JFK will be faster and probably
about the same cost (http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/jgtsfram.htm).
