Slim,

My Islander 36 was launched off of a very large trailer in just this
manner.  A semi-tractor backs down the ramp as far as possible and then
disconnects the trailer from the truck and continues backing it down with
the cable.  It's done very slowly and If one tire hangs it is very obvious
and you just stop the cable and re-wind.  I was told by the marina operator
that this is a vey common method in many marinas.  This marina launches and
recovers hundreds of boats a year, some as big as 45 feet.
