you mean tricky dick? ;-)  i think they felt together they could win the white house. without teaming up nixon might win. what always gets me, is what a different kind of campaign is run when,(as now), there is no incumbent.

I remember well the rivalry between Jack Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson in their primaries. Maybe a higher purpose motivated them to work together while they could. There were some bitter feelings there as they competed for the nomination.
