Jeff:

The value of a Rhodes 22 is hard to set. Michael Meltzer, our host had two
Rhodes 22 until he had too many kids to safely control. I recall him saying
that a sail boat loses about half its value in the first three years.

Why then do some older Rhodes 22 cost as much as they do? The answer is the
the cost and value of reconditioning a sail boat. Making a new sailboat or
reconditioning an old sail boat is labor intensive, requires the appropriate
know how, and correct materials.

An illustration of this is the cost of relacing the lines on a Rhodes 22.
If you get a good quality line, each line costs. While New England Ropes is
the current standard for quality, just look at the prices they or their
vendors charge.

Then new and reconditioned boats bought thru Stan have his guarentees.
Others selling their boats used think that the prices he charges, they
should get when selling their boats. What happens is that Stan's recycling
boats raises the prices of all sales. Then over the years, those of us on
this forum hear complaints about what they got.

Stan used to sell used boats directly without reconditioning. He used to
recondition older boats. He has gotten into issues doing so. Now he only
reconditions newer boats or boats relatively recent boats that he believes
are in reasonable condition. While fiberglass hulls can be repaired from
any state, the issues and costs of some problems are not worth it from a
business point of view. Those hulls are left to skilled rebuilders such as
Lou Rosenberg of Brooklyn, New York.

So what is the value of your boat? What a willing buyer will pay.

The biggest problem of selling your Rhodes 22 is whatever you sell it for,
you cannot replace it with another Rhodes 22 at near that price and
condition. Just ask Brad Haslett. If you have a trailer, it is better to
keep it and use it just a couple of times a year.

Again, your home is a destination area. Have you sailed to Cumberland
Island? Have you hit any submarines?

people thought the earth was spherical, they were wrong. But if you think
that thinking the earth is spherical is just as wrong as thinking the earth
is flat, then your view is wronger than both of them put together."
