George,

One of the snapshots Rummy sent is very revealing.  Notice the hole in the furling tube.  The furling line, which would wisely be replaced if frayed, threads into the tube thru this hole and can be fed south thru the tube end.  Knot the end of the line and pull it back up the tube until it is taut.  As Rummy said, the whole assembly slips down the mast, including a solid ring at the top of the mast (which keeps the furling tube centered).  

When you slide the assembly back into the mast, top slides in, tube slides up, the car (with the furling line threaded through the vertical molded slot and then through the tube hole and knotted) is fed into the mast.  The molded vertical slot of the car and the threaded furling line are positioned between the two horizontal rings attached to the car.  Look at the configuration before you lower the mast and you will better picture this - I don't have a snapshot.  

While you have it apart you will see the two plastic bushings that seat in the middle of the rings, one in each with a retaining screw.  Note also that there is a cap on the tube end.

I can also plain by phone if we can pre-arrange.  Your confusion will be quickly remedied as you dis- and re-assemble.  It's a nice rig!
