Bob:

Why would this topic have to be back channel. Ironically, before my
trip to Ukaine two years ago, I asked many similar questions of those I knew
who had traveled to that part of the world.
I will forward your post to several that I know who routinely have
traveled to that area. Do not be surprised where some of your responses may
come from.
I will add some of my own comments out in the open. Get a international
travel pouch that you carry around your neck. Readily available even at
wall mart. Put your passport in a plastic baggie in the pouch. In another
sandwich bag inside opaque envelope put cash in U.S $ in 100's, 20's ten's
and ones. I would not be hesitant to carry $1000. I have carried much
more. I have been told by world travelers this is much safer than a money
belt or in a wallet. In fact I did not carry a wallet.
Take several packages of imodium in tablet form. Maybe some pepto
bismo in tablet form. Asprins. Small tube of vaseline and antibotic cream.
I used a back pack with many pockets as my carry on, a genuine backpackers
type.
A small digital camera is nice. I recommend using many small memory
chips rather than a few big ones. A large number of batteries for camera.
I tried to use rechargable, but an electronic camera uses them up quickly so
always keep a set of heavy duty lithium camera batteries with you.
That is an expensive way to get out of Maine. Have you considered
getting a used blue water boat and sail yourself?
