[Rhodes22-list] BVI bareboat

Rummy beat me to the punch on why cotton. The only thing that I would
add is that the synthetics have gotten much much better over the past
couple of years to the point that they are just as comfortable as
cotton.

Bill:
If it half as much fun as your Bahama adventure turned out ---- I
know we'll enjoy it. I've taken all the courses (keelboat thru
bareboat) but this will be my first time to bareboat is the reason I'm
asking the question. The camera is a must of course (as you have aptly
underscored with your narrative). Why avoid cotton?

  How about me?!?

I did a charter in the San Juan Islands a couple of years ago. Remember
to close all the side ports if you sail in brisk wind. Also, pack your
personal items in a duffle bag (not hard side suitcase). Pack the bare
minimum that you think you will need, and then just before leaving take
out half of what you packed. Avoid cotton.

I haven't been to the BVIs, but I understand that Sunsail is one of the
best outfits down there. From what I have read, you need to get to some
of the more popular anchorages early in the day to make sure you get a
mooring ball. Remember that half the fun of cruising is spontaneity and
conquering the unexpected. Don't get hung up on a schedule or strict
itinerary. Go with the flow. I'm still learning to do this, and the
better I get at it the more enjoyable it has become.

As far as qualifications, if you haven't ever chartered before, it would
probably be good to have taken an ASA or US Sailing course on keel boat
and/or coastal cruising. They always want you to submit a sailing
resume', but I am told that as long as your credit card clears you are
good to go.

And, you'll love this one.....

I'm going to captain and chaperone (in a very loose sense) one of four
boats that are being chartered to carry the University of Tennessee
Sailing Club to Key West for their Spring Break in early March. We will
depart from Ft. Meyers and sail directly to Key West for 3 days of
spring break fun, and then back. The faculty advisor to the sailing
club is a fellow yacht club member and friend, and he needed another
over 21 year old that could skipper. My son has requested to be
assigned to a different boat than mine. I can't blame him. As time
passes, I am more and more glad that I had him with me on the trip to
the Bahamas. Me thinks it is going to be a very different experience
than the Bahamas trip. I just hope it isn't as extreme as "Girls Gone
Wild"....or maybe not.

I'll try to take notes and write a log, but I'm not sure how much I will
remember.

Yes, take me with you.

Actually, I'm interested in the same subject. Anyone done this before?
How
much skill or certifications do they require? I would love to do
something
like this one day.

> Surely with all the expertise represented by this list someone
has
been to the BVI's bareboating. I'm leaving the winterized Rhodes in
the
lot til spring but (because I can't wait til spring to sail) head to
Tortola
for my first experience bareboating. Looking for a list of "do's" and
"don't's" if anyone has had experience there. Too late for advise on
the
best company (Sunsail) --- had to decide that earlier --- too late on
the
type of boat (Beneteau393) --- for that had to decided at the same time.
This non-political subject line was prompted by Bill's Bahama adventures
and
the commentary posted about mosquito netting. My questions relate
primarily
to questions like "should I take mosquito netting as a precautionary
measure' and what to watch out for, essential or needed things to take
they
forget to tell you about, and such. Any suggestions from this
knowledgeable crew?
