Got cones and rods?  Pirates wore a patch over one eye not because they lost
the eye but because the patch keeps that eye accustomed to the dark.  They
could go from a sunny deck into a dark hold, remove the patch and see just
fine.  Or go from a lit cabin up to a dark deck and not have to wait for
their eyes to adjust which takes an average of twenty minutes.  With the
patch, it's immediate night vision.

They just tested this on "Mythbusters" and it works!  Arrrrrrrrrr!!
