I was deliberately vague in my use of the term "votes", simply because the functionality of how the popular vote affects the electoral vote which then affects the presidential election was not the pont. My statement, as posted, was 100% correct.

Maybe I read Herb's note wrong...  I'll let him 'splain.

For what it's worth, although I think the last election was a farce, I
thought the issues had more to do with Florida election and Supreme Court
irregularities.  It seems to me that the electoral college still plays a
useful role in reminding people about the states part of United States of
America, and is a safeguard of the role of the states in our system of
government.
