I second Dave's request for a picture of all the pieces involved.  Not
every
Rhodes 22 is exactly the same.

That being said, Stan uses wedge shaped spacer piece between the
spreaders
and the mast.  That is used to set the correct angle of the spreaders to
mast.  The bolt runs thru it as if it was a big plastic washers.  

The spreaders do not angle forward.  The angle of walls of the mast
would
set them forward at that point without the piece.  The piece sets them
angled very slightly backward.
