[Rhodes22-list] now skinny on benny

Ben,
Thanks for the update and congratulations on having a son! I though Russia
was putting a halt to adoptions so it would seem you're lucky to have pulled
it off. How do the dogs like him? Always good to hear from members who
have been active and then away for awhile. Hope you get more sailing in
now. - rob

Rob,

I have been pretty out of touch recently. The admiral and I were in Russia
for
four weeks (plus one more week back in March). We've been back for less
than two
full weeks after what turned into a grueling trip.

The back story is that I've got a new deck-swabber in training. We
completed the
adoption of our son. Shuffling through one bureaucratic mess after another,
and
haven't gotten to sail nearly enough.

You guys will be proud to know that he spent his first full day after
getting
home sailing. It was a rougher day than I intended to start him on -- ended
up
being 15 kts with quite a heavy chop on the lake -- but he seemed to enjoy
it.
At least while awake. Here's a link to a picture:

If you have some time, and if you're interested in the whole story and/or
pictures from Russia, see this page: http://theskinnyonbenny.com/adop.

I've used this as an excuse to partially retire -- or I suppose part-time
house-husband might be the term people would use for someone my age. So
hopefully, I'll contribute more to the list. I'll definitely get to go
sailing
more often.

More generally, my impression of Louisiana is that it's back to normal.
I've
spent a lot of time in New Orleans in the past few months, and anything that
you
would ever want to do as a business traveler or tourist is going to seem
just
like normal. Yes, the news will show you whole neighborhoods where no or
little
recovery has been done. Those areas won't be back any time soon. I was all
about demanding help from the local and federal government for a year or so,
but
if you haven't ripped off the first piece of moldy sheet rock two years
after the
storm, you aren't really planning to come back. Some devastated
neighborhoods --
including where Velvet Elvis lives -- are almost entirely back to normal.

By the way, I sampled some good Cuban rums while I was in Russia, since I
hadn't
otherwise gotten the opportunity to try them. They were good (Havannah was
my
favorite), but Mt. Gay is better, and less expensive too.

Ben
