Mary Lou, et al.,

Nice description and excellent picture. Just a reminder that the 175 loses
its shape when we reef it in enough to get it inboard of the upper shrouds.
Everything on a sailboat is a comprimise. Last year I added a luff pad
which makes a huge difference. The luff pad simply adds some bulk to the
luff of the sail so that when you roll it up, the belly of the sail is
taken in more so you don't get that sagging in the middle of the sail.

As for tactics--clawing as high as you can and going slow vs. falling off a
little and going faster--I don't think there's a clear answer. It depends
on all the variables you're sailing with--racing, destination, comfort,
route, purpose, etc. But sheeting inboard, close hauled will certainly
help. Pop top down will certainly help. In theory, the centerboard should
be all the way down but that's a variable too. Adjust as needed per your
purpose.
