Rik,

The devil is always in the details.  You are right, I'm not an expert
despite having a degree in accounting and a bit of experience with tax
accounting.  The last version of the flat tax I saw floated stated that
anyone who earned less than 50K per year paid no taxes.  If you look at the
current tax payer distribution, 20% paid 80% of the taxes anyway.  A flat
tax is no different.  Now as to the second part of your comment - will the
Congress learn to live off of less money?  Only if they are starved!
Correct my memory of history where I'm wrong, but I think most of the
immigrants who came to this country did so for the opportunity, not the
government  promised free ride. You can't escape the old conundrum,  "a
government that can give you everything can take everything away".
