Ed,

No, I always at least squawk 1200. If I depart directly south I have to
contact Memphis ATC to get out of the class B airspace or delay climbing for
about 30 miles. They always hand me off to Memphis Center and eventually
Houston Center near the gulf. Sometimes I decline the flight following, go
VFR, and listen to a CD. My moving map display shows the restricted airspace
along the way so I just skirt around the edges if I'm running silent.
There's a lot of military operating areas in MS with 24 year old rookies
flying jets at high speed but I mostly stay below 8000' and out of their
way. There's some traffic avoidance boxes out there that are coming down in
price ($500 for a glareshield non tso'd model). My next purchase is going
to be a Garmin 496 at $2300 that I can also use in my car and on the boat.
Right now I need to get back to work on the Bo. I've been teaching almost
every day this month to make up for the time off early in the month for the
Bahama cruise. I haven't found any show-stoppers during the inspection but
have stumbled across a number of "nit-noy" items that are time consuming and
expensive. For example, I'm replacing all the fabric covers in the wheel
wells for $315 for what is probably $5 in fabric. Thank you tort lawyers!
We're going to the lake this weekend. The Bo can wait another week.
