[Rhodes22-list] My First Real Look

I've taken my first hard and good look at my newly acquired 1987 R22.
And here is my report and appreciate your input:

1. Furling jib get stuck when rolling and bringing the jib in - this
has already happened 2x. Had to go to the bow and hold the cylindrical
drum while pulling on the jib sheet. Is there a fix? I also plan to
get the jib and main sail refurbished by SailCare. I got a $200 quote
which I thought was a good deal for both. How do I bring the main/jib
sails down? I have the IMF and CDI furling jib.

2. Centerboard not dropping down easily, need to fish it down. I
thought my buddy did this and only realized when I double checked it
went down that much further. I suppose it needs to be taken apart to
check for debris/gunk.

3. Pop-Up Top slider is broke, the hook part does not exist where
cotter pin goes onto. I just ended up wrapping a cord around the
pop-top slider to secure in place. Got a price from Stan for $150
which I likely will need to replace. Unless there's another option?

4. Rudder. Need a clutch widget to secure rudder in the down position
and in the up position. Rudder kept on coming up. The previous owner
had a piece of wood in place that just easilly broke off. Now all I
see are two screws w/ 1 wing nut on one of them. Is there a more
effective solution? I asked this question to Stan and he quoted $100,
I wonder what I would get?

5. Fuel line: How to run the fuel line under the seat. The fuel hose
just sits freely from the tank to the top of the stern cushions and
looks sloppy. What have you guys done? Didn't want to get happy
drilling holes and regretting it.

6. No 120v electrical outlets - was it not available in 1987?
Previous owner also has never installed a battery. The only
connections I see are under the v-berths - a grey electrical cable (14
ga?). Does black go w/ red? I hear about AGM but will a deep cycle
battery be good enough? My needs are simple, for now...exterior
lights, interior lights, water pump, planned VHF radio purchase &
stereo. I see a battery box at WM which I plan to use to secure the
battery on the 2 pieces of wood in front of the water tank. I also
noticed a two-wires (one fused) coming out of the water pump I suppose
this connects directly to the battery or does it go to the elec panel.

7. What's a comfortable sitting position when on the helm? Couldn't
sit in the back next to tiller facing forward. Main sheet traveler
hits my shoulder. Otherwise, possibly need a hiking stick to reach
tiller when facing port/starboard. Stan quoted a hiking stick w/
coaming boxes for $175. Looks like the most comfortable position is
next to the stern rail. I suppose Stan's version of the catbird seat
would be worthwhile..is it?

8. VHF Radio, where to mount? My electrical panel has an aux input and
I suppose this is where the electrical would hook up to. How about the
antennae wiring? Do I have to drill a hole next to to mast light
fitting?

9. Need a replacement c206 Canister for Buehl stove. Googling C 206
butane cartridge, nowhere to be found! Funny it is available but only
in the UK. I wanted to take advantage of a stove and the hole that's
there already. Is there an equivalent I can get?

10. The 9 mast rigging has never been replaced. After 20 years, should
it be replaced. Its still looks pretty good? How much should I budget
for this?

Well this is my equivalent letterman's top 10 list and actually have
more but I think this is enough for now, maybe too much.....

I appreciate all your feedback.

Best,
Michael
