[Rhodes22-list] Burt comments on posts about Spinnaker Sails

Ed,
It appears that the quote is indeed for the UPS. I believe the square
footage is the same (I'll have to look it up to be sure). It even
says UPS at the bottom of the quote. One difference that may add some
dollars to the cost is the Facnor continuous line furler. I know that
when we were working with Doyle on the specs for the sail, Paul was
looking for a continuous line furler that was small enough but at the
time he couldn't find one that was at all affordable. Instead they
used a Harken mini-furler.

The continuous line furler would be nice as we originally had some
problems furling the sail when it was windy. The furler would be full
and we would run out of line before the sail was completely furled
(furling too tightly in the wind). We solved the problem by going to
a smaller diameter high-tech line. It works well most of the time
though the line occasionally ties itself in knots and there is a lot of it.

While the continuous line furler would be nice, I suspect that it
would add at least a small chunk or change to the cost. In any event
we paid $975 for the sail and furler 5 years ago. The price is on the
order form on the Rhodes22.org website. Of that something like 600
was for the sail and 400 was for the furler and other hardware.

That order form has been there for 5 years so you would expect the
cost to go up though double is a lot. I wonder if the fabric is an
upgrade from the .9 nylon that we used 5 years ago?

Burt, if you are still interested, it's probably worth talking to
Paul to see what kind of a club or other discount he could offer and
to see if they are quoting higher tech materials than are necessary.
