[Rhodes22-list] sailing: colregs Q

Peter, The colregs state that a power vessel should display a white light which can be seen from 360 degrees above and astern of the red & green sidlights.  I also read that vessels under sail 26 - 60 foot are required to display a stearn light and sidelights.  It may not be safe but I think you could get away with a flashlight shined on your sail while not under power.
