[Rhodes22-list] depth finder mount / nav options .... was: how big is your ....

Have to check out Seaclear when I get some time. We're in the dark
ages when it comes to electronic navigation. Our handheld GPS dates
back to the late 90s I think. No maps, just a little LCD screen
showing a track and lat/lon readout. It stores several hundred
waypoints and I think I have about 60 or 70 stored after 8 or 9
years. It's been great for our purposes as I still love working with
paper charts and using the GPS for verification of where we think we are.

On the Chesapeake depth contours are a great navigation tool. You can
work your way around points of land using a depth contour to avoid
shoals and yet staying well out the way of commercial traffic and the
powerboat traffic that tends to go bouy to bouy (or waypoint to
waypoint). If you are crossing a channel youcan tell when you are
appoaching the other side or when you are out of the channel. Great
for picking anchoring spots and knowing how much scope to let out
too. We rarely worry about running aground but we use our depth
sounder a lot. Our deeper draft friends will sometimes send us
through a pass between islands or a creek entrance first so we can
get read outs to see if they should attempt to follow.
