Sounds like the float (carb) is stuck open. It's too rich at idle. 
That's why it'll only run with the throttle open. Take the hood off and 
rap the carb a couple times with a screwdriver handle. See if that will 
jiggle it loose. If not, take off the float bowl and clean it all up 
with carb cleaner and spray down the float and needle and seat. I like 
Justice Brothers carb cleaner, but most any aerisol carb cleaner will 
work. Put the bowl back on, pump your fuel line bulb a couple times and 
it'll probably take right off.

You could try squirting some carb cleaner in through the air breather on 
the float bowl too, before you take it apart.

Once you get it going put some Sea Foam in the fuel tank, be generous.
