Caesar,
When I said release the topping lift, that's exactly what I meant. You will  
want to secure the line once it has some slack in it so that you don't lose  
it up the mast. By releasing the topping lift, you are allowing your main sheet 
 to tighten the main sail giving it that perfect shape we all strive for. I 
hope  you don't think I was being critical, it was just something I noticed and 
I've  done the same thing myself after a couple of rum and cokes. You will be 
amazed  at the difference it will make.

By release, do you mean that one should secure the topping  lift when the 
boom is a few degrees beyond perpendicular to the mast, say 95  degrees?

Just a casual observation, but you need to  release the topping lift next  
time you go  out.
