One of the problems though, is that you don't control all aspects of the 
email that is sent. Many systems restrict the size of attachments on 
incoming email (systems can also restrict the size of outgoing email, 
but that's between you and your ISP).  1mb has been the "default" 
restriction for a lot of systems.

Many systems now just strip all picture attachments because of the 
potential for viruses within picture files, but that's a whole 'nother 
discussion.
