John,
Why not tap a hole (1/4") into the mast, right at the slot, and at the desired height, (holes on each side to match up with the PT brackets, hole in the center for the 'gooseneck bolt'), with a ~2"x1/4" SS bolt (gooseneck bolt) screwed into the newly tapped hole.  Dwyer sells the gooseneck for about $40, so you could even fabricate your own with 1" aluminum strip from HD.
