The official charts are nice, but some small companies that a local area and
embellish the details.  Are you familiar with:

Maybe you have their Smith Mountain Lake map?  But go to their maps page
then go to nc page and look:

There is a single complete map for the whole Albamarle Sound, and I bet
having used other of their maps they have greatly embellished the details.  

And scroll down, there is a book of maps of the whole North Carolina Coast. 
Again, they add proprietary details, like where to find fish, sunken
treasure, you know the tantalizing stuff.

Have you read the post about Columbia, North Carolina and its free city
dock?  Well you should know that a sailboat just is not going to get under
that bridge.  So the city built a walkway to the highway reststop with the
potties and visitors center and see this:
