[Rhodes22-list] This day in history

Mike,

Those of us (like me) who consider themselves 'real' conservatives have
always had a problem with 43. He talked the talk but grew the federal
government instead of shrinking it. And lets face facts, "he ain't no
articulator." Who knows what his ideas on energy were in the beginning, I
sure don't. 9/11, as they say, changed everything. But given his
background in oil and his choice of early advisers, I'm think he's a
believer in Peak Oil. The Bush family had a close relationship with the
royal Saudi family and I'm guessing he had an inkling just how dysfunctional
that family and that country was/is. If you read Simmons' (an early 43
energy advisor) book "Twilight in the Desert" you get a feel for just how
precarious is the Saudi nation and their impact on world oil markets. You
may very well be correct, he may be forcing the nations hand to drill, build
nukes, or both. I caught snippets of a speech he made in St. Louis last week
and he explained in pretty simple fashion (and fairly unmangled for him)
that with increasing world demand and falling domestic production, gasoline
prices would remain high. Whatever, we've gone through another
administration just like everyone since FDR started us down this "cheap oil"
policy with no clear cut energy policy. I haven't heard any of the three
remaining candidates say anything intelligent about what their policies
would be. Standby for more of the same.

People will be less radical about their environmentalism when the pain
becomes great enough. They will also wonder why we've been so 'soft' on
terrorism when the next attack comes. I'd love to be more optimistic on the
latter. We'll be fighting this war decades from now.
