To my knowledge, they never have been friendly.
 
Where I grew up we eat possum, and its quite a delicacy in the wild meat category.  We go hunting for possum; it's called manicou in Trinidad & Tobago.
 
I can tell you from experience that its finger-licking good.

Thanks.  I really needed that laugh.  I grew up in the country and 
actually had a possum for a pet once. 
They really are not very friendly!
