[Rhodes22-list] Oh My God!

Herb,

I can believe every word, and I am appalled. I will not deny that thee are jerks in education (they are the epitome of "Those who can't, teach...) who give the rest of us a bad name.

But name a profession that doesn't have the jerks in it.

What I do know is that when I began in 1969, and through the 80's, I LOVED teaching. We had fun. Kids & parents were working in concert with the schools. (The school I happened to be in at the time was the last bastion of segregation in this county...they did not fully integrate until the time I moved there..) We worked hard and learned...sometimes together..(.good teaching inspired good thinking ) and the circle continued.....

But somewhere in the 80's, things changed. Legislators began meddling and criticizing; a day didn't go by without reading about new regs, laws, Standards of Quality, cookie-cutter education..It was not fun anymore. We were under fire from all sides. Now we have 'No Child Left Behind" or "Let's raise everyone to the lowest common denominator." Critical thinking? How can that be bubbled in?

What a mess ...and with budgets being cut, schools are laboring under these unfunded mandates...talk about stress!

I'm glad I'm now in the after-school volunteer tutoring ranks.

elle

We can't change the angle of the wind....but we can adjust our sails.
