Lou,

Anchor when you go forward single handing.  There is no safe way to go 
forward using jacklines.  Anchor first from the stern.  Then either move 
the anchor forward to the bow cleat (to put your sails into the wind) or 
go forward and drop a second anchor before releasing the stern anchor to 
turn the boat.
