Chris,

 I have a 71 Rhodes and it uses a rope traveller that is run thru the
pulleys and down to a cleat. you can use this setup as an additional back
stay tensioner. Tightening the rope pulls the backstays together  and brings
the boom in. The enclosed is picture doesn't show the whole set up but I
think you'll get the Idea.
