Hi all,

I met up with Mike Cheung his charming admiral and his recycled in 08
Rhodes up at my neck of the woods at Kinzua last weekend. If any have been
following we have in the past discussed trying to get under the Rt 59 bridge
which spans the lake right near the marina. I've ventured up to this sucker
several times but was to much of a wimp to go it alone. Mike and I docked
together to see first who had the taller mast.

Since Mike was taller it was decided he would make the first pass near the
bridge and I would trail to see if he had clearance. Once you could stand
back and see the mast in perspective it was obvious he could clear it with
ease.

He went motoring south to meet up with his friends and I had the wind at my
back so I sailed up to a cove near the marina. On sunday morning he had some
spare time left and was kind enough to sail along side with me so we could
evaluate the boats performance wise. How would the new Muireann and her
captain fare

against an oldie but a goodie

We covered about 1 1/2 nautical miles with the wind 3-5 kts. on a port
reach(wind 75 to 105 degrees) both boats had the same amount of sail out and
for the most part it seemed a dead heat with the boats swapping lead as the
shifting wind favored one or the other but overall Muireann had the lead
most of the time. When we switched around to go back the wind shifted
slightly so we were beating up wind. There Mikes shinny new Doyle sails took
over and my OEM Lee deck sweeper showed its age collapsing while Mikes genoa
held its shape so well it looked like a painting. I estimate he could out
point me by 10-15 degrees as things stand. I would have liked to sail with
mains only to see standard vs IMF performance (we both have new mains) but
time did not permit. A more detailed evaluation will have to wait till next
year when hopefully we can meet again and be more evenly matched in canvas.
