I just went through the car shopping ordeal for some friends of mine here in Memphis and found a 2008 Toyota Camry with 66K miles (high for the year but not a big deal) for $13K. Most of the 2-5 year old Camrys were $10K plus so they jumped on this deal.  Look at Craigslist and eBay to see what individuals are selling, then go to KBB.com, Edmonds.com, and NADAguides.com to get a realistic value.

Here's another option that may be attractive that my friends almost followed my advice on - buy a new Hyundai.  They're built in Montgomery, AL, come with a 100,000 mile warranty, and are great values.  The only downside is they don't hold their resale value as well as Toyota.  Look at the Hyundai Sonata and the smaller Elantra.  They are offering cash rebates or 0 per cent financing.  Frankly, if I were your daughter, I'd stretch a little bit for a new one and not worry about maintenance for awhile. That was exactly the plan I had in mind for my youngest son (who I assure you knows less about cars than your daughter) until Fan decided to buy a new Honda CRV and we sold her old Accord to Alex.
