  My mother came from Belarus and immigrated to the US after WWII.  My 
  father was also
  from close by, over the Polish border.  They met during the war as 
  partisans in the
  Bileski resistance group.  That is the group on which the new movie 
  "Defiance" is
  based. 

  I was there a few years ago and toured the old villages "schtetels"and a 
  partisan
  camp deep in the Belarussian woods. 
  The country then seemed to be stuck in the 1930's - although now I 
  believe that there has
  been some progress in improving and rebuilding the infrastructure.
