John,

If you don't already have a UPS, get an asymmetrical Spinnaker.  It's
practically the same thing except that it doesn't attach to the stay.  The
foot attaches to the shackle on the bow it is raised with a halyard.  the
clew is held by the sheets.  With a spinnaker, gybes are done with the sail
going outside the stay so the genny and its hardware do not interfere.  Here
is a good site on how to rig it.  This can be done single handed as you
don't need a pole or any of its associated lines.
