By stowing the straps in the cover you are protecting them from UV 
damage (somewhat). Our bimini is 11 years old and looks it.but the 
dacron straps are only showing a small amount of UV degradation. I 
would imagine they would be a lot worse if they had been continually 
exposed to the sun. We bungie the covered bimini to the boom when we 
leave the boat.
